Specifications and Prices

Memory

A server will need to reserve a certain amount of memory while it is processing a web page, or incoming email, so the amount of memory you need will be proportional to how busy your server is. When a server hits its memory limit, performance usually degrades sharply.

Processor

The model and speed of the processor in this server.

Cores

The number of simultaneous processing units that this server can do. Literally the number of things it can do at once. A two-core server can handle a lot of tasks literally twice as fast as a one-core server, though some tasks will make better use of multiple cores than others (processing web pages splits itself fairly ideally across multiple cores though).

Spindles

The number of separate physical discs that are dedicated to this hosting. When a server has split your data across lots of discs, it can usually read it faster because each disc can read a chunk of the file simultaneously.

Backup space

The amount of off-site storage you are allocated with this product, which is intended for you to set up backups. Backup space quotas may be pooled between different products on the same account.

Traffic allowance

The amount of data you may transfer in one month from this product before excess charges apply. Traffic allowances may be pooled between products on the same account.

Our monster

The storage monster is based on one of our high specification dedicated servers, but sitting in 12-drive chassis. This makes it ideal for high capacity, low-cost storage, and much cheaper and more flexible than specialist storage providers.

Alternatively you can use a pair of them in a cluster as a high-performance SAN or database server.

Technical setup and performance details

There are many ways to set up 12 drives, but we've assumed you want to
use them for safe, flexible online storage. We deliver the server
using:

  • HP Hardware RAID with 512MiB flash-backed write cache
  • RAID-6 to combine all the drives into a single unit
  • A small logical volume for the OS for simple installation
  • The remaining space formatted with LVM (so you can easily partition, and repartition)

We can, of course, set the drives up in other ways but we think this
strike a good balance between a reliably-booting system, safe data, and
high storage capacity

Q. What if my server goes wrong?

When we deliver your dedicated server, you get access to the console shell which allows you to both reboot and access the console of your server. This means that even if your firewall is misconfigured, or you're investigating a hardware fault, you can keep control of the server.

Q. What happens if there's a hardware fault?

Bytemark monitor the serial lines of all our servers to look out for disc failures. If we see one, we'll contact you to arrange to bring the server down to change the disc. Because all our servers have two discs, you shouldn't lose any data as a result of such a failure.

That's the most common fault, but if you spot something else, our excellent support people will track it down, even out of hours, and fix it for you. We guarantee to change faulty hardware, once reported, within 4 working hours, or 24 hours.

Q. Can I reimage the server?

Yes you can! If you need to start over, you can use our console shell to reimage your system at any time, without intervention from Bytemark.

Operating system choices

You can pick from any of the following OS for your dedicated server:

Linux
  • Debian GNU/Linux (squeeze)
  • Ubuntu (precise and quantal)
  • CentOS (6.3 and 5.8)
Windows
  • Windows Server 2012 Standard/Datacenter Edition
  • SQL Server + other Microsoft products

Our Windows licensing page should help you work out the right version of Windows for your needs.

“Bytemark's technical advice and support is exceptional and always fills us with confidence. When I go to Bytemark I am always left feeling that the people there are looking out for me.”
